Why This List Exists
Hi, I'm Nick Lookabaugh, the founder of 945 Studios. Over the past year I've worked with small businesses to help them improve their local search presence and attract more targeted leads. The same handful of Google Business Profile mistakes come up again and again, and every one of them is costing somebody money.
None of these are hard to fix. Most take minutes. That is exactly why it is worth going through the list properly.
The 12 Mistakes
1. Complete Your Business Profile
- The mistake. Leaving sections like the business description, contact information, and business hours incomplete.
- Why it matters. Google prioritizes fully completed profiles. Missing information can hurt your ranking and cost you customers who cannot find what they need.
- The fix. Fill out every section of your profile, including description, contact details, and hours.
2. Respond to Customer Reviews
- The mistake. Not responding to reviews, or failing to encourage customers to leave them.
- Why it matters. Reviews are a ranking factor, and engaging with them builds trust and credibility.
- The fix. Reply to every review, positive or negative, and ask satisfied customers to leave one.
3. Post Regular Updates Using Google Posts
- The mistake. Not using Google Posts to share updates, promotions, or news.
- Why it matters. Google rewards active profiles. Posting about sales, offers, or events improves your local visibility.
- The fix. Post at least once a month, more if you have the material.
4. Optimize Your Business Description and Services
- The mistake. Using generic or irrelevant keywords in your business name, description, or category.
- Why it matters. Google uses the description and categories to understand what you do. Relevant keywords help you match the right searches.
- The fix. Write a description around the services you actually sell, and pick the category that matches your main revenue.
5. Keep Your NAP Consistent
- The mistake. Inconsistent or incorrect name, address and phone number across the web.
- Why it matters. Consistency across listings helps you rank better and makes it easier for customers to find you.
- The fix. Audit every directory listing and make the details identical everywhere.
6. Use the Questions & Answers Section
- The mistake. Not answering commonly asked questions from potential customers.
- Why it matters. The Q&A feature lets you engage customers directly on your profile and improves visibility.
- The fix. Seed the section with the questions you get asked on the phone every week, and answer them.
7. Avoid Duplicate Listings
- The mistake. Creating multiple listings for the same business.
- Why it matters. Google may get confused about which is real, which lowers rankings for all of them.
- The fix. Maintain exactly one listing per location and request removal of duplicates.
8. Set Your Business Hours Correctly
- The mistake. Incorrect hours, or failing to update them for holidays and special events.
- Why it matters. Google prioritizes accurate hours, especially for location-based searches.
- The fix. Keep hours current and set special hours ahead of every holiday.
9. Upload High-Quality Photos
- The mistake. Not uploading photos, or using poor-quality images.
- Why it matters. Listings with photos receive more interactions, and quality images help customers get a feel for your business.
- The fix. Add real, well-lit photos of your work, your team and your premises.
10. Add Products or Services to Your Profile
- The mistake. Failing to add detailed products or services.
- Why it matters. A detailed list makes you more discoverable for the specific things people search for.
- The fix. Add your key products and services with clear descriptions.
11. Enable Messaging on Your Profile
- The mistake. Not enabling direct messaging with customers.
- Why it matters. Messaging lets customers reach you directly, which leads to higher engagement and more sales.
- The fix. Turn messaging on, and make sure someone actually watches it.
12. Make Sure Your Website Is Mobile-Friendly
- The mistake. A website that is not optimized for mobile users.
- Why it matters. Google prioritizes mobile-friendly websites in rankings, and most local searches happen on a phone.
- The fix. Test your site on a phone and fix whatever is hard to tap, read or load.
